Blue Institute Dance Company

Company History

Founded by award-winning choreographer Madeleine Twyman, The Blue Institute Dance Company is a contemporary dance ensemble that merges art, philosophy, and human experience in a uniquely powerful way. Drawing on historical and cultural references, as well as modern dance techniques, the company brings to life stories that have often been overlooked or underrepresented, particularly those surrounding the feminine experience and collective identity.

The company’s work is rooted in the Graham technique, enhanced by elements of contemporary ballet, athleticism, improvisation, and partnering. Its signature style combines the sculptural and the symbolic, with choreography that is visually striking and emotionally stirring. The Blue Institute uses dance as a tool for cultural exploration and transformation, creating pieces that blur the lines between contemporary art, performance, and theatre.

Key milestones in the company’s history include:

  • She of Ten Thousand Names premiered at Harbourfront Centre (2024), showcasing the company’s deep commitment to exploring the nuanced and complex experiences of women.
  • The Feminine Other presented by Open Doors North America in Orlando, Florida (2023), further cemented The Blue Institute’s international presence.
  • SOTTN (2023) was performed at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, presented by The Canadian Opera Company, a significant achievement in the company’s artistic journey.

The Blue Institute has been presented by esteemed institutions such as The Canadian Opera CompanyDanceOntario, and Open Doors North America and continues to engage audiences with performances that blend the past and present, the personal and the collective.
